The following selections reveal a brief glimpse of the varied stylings, themes and rhetoric explored throughout E.S. Durkan’s wider work of academic, journalistic, prose, and poems. In his prose and verse, Durkan employs crisp images, strung together in confluence, in order to offer readers a way in, a resting place, a chance to lay down the weight of thought and sink into the warm, marine layers of the mind— a world unbent by intellect, yet not unintellectual. In his academic/journalistic writing, he composes thriftily, using precise scientific language and well-researched sources cited from the literature. In both paradigms, the author hopes his work may serve as an aide— perhaps even a comfort— a unique way to access the information contained within.
